FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen  The FIRST Vex challenge is a mid-level robotics competition which inspires young peoples' interest and participation in science, technology, engineering and math, which building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.

  1. A team consists of a maximum of 10 students with adult mentors.

  2. A team meets every week for 2-3 months to design and build a robot to perform in competition.

  3. Matches are played on a foam mat surface (140" square wall to wall) composed of two teams (alliance) on each side.

  4. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent alliance by placing softballs into your colored goals, possessing the atlas ball (30" diameter inflated ball) on your side of the field, and by being parked on the platform or hanging.

  5. The beginning of the game starts with a 20 second Autonomous Period.

  6. There are a total of 46 softballs available as scoring objects in the game.

  7. You receive a different number of points depending on how you score.

The championship tournament takes place in Weatherly, PA
and the National Championship is held in Atlanta, GA.
